Description
Light Dicks is a variety of Salix purpurea.
This willow variety is grown for medium to fine willow basketry work. The one year old stems of Light Dicks are a very attractive pale reddish brown. One year old rods grow to a length of c. 4-6' long once established and seem to be resistant to the pest insects that cause branching.
If left to mature, this willow variety will grow into a spreading shrub up to 5m tall.
Distribution
Salix purpurea is a locally common shrub of river margins
and wet ground widely distributed throughout Britain and Ireland.
It can be seen, far from habitation or cultivation, by streams or
on damp hillsides. There are a number of varieties grown for basket
making across the south of England. We have cultivated Dicky Meadows,
Dark Dicks, Light Dicks and Richartii at our coppice in Gloucestershire.
