Description
Dicky Meadows is a named willow variety of of Salix purpurea.
Grown for fine willow basketry work, the one year old stems of Dicky Meadows are a very attractive straw yellow colour. One year old rods grow to a length of c. 4-7ft once established and seem to be resistant to pest insects that cause branching.
If left to mature, this willow plant will grow into a spreading shrub upto 4m tall.
Distribution
Salix purpurea is a locally common willow shrub of river margins
and wet ground widely distributed throughout Britain and Ireland.
It can be seen, far from habitation or cultivation, by streams or
on damp hillsides. There are a number of varieties grown for basket
making across the south of England. We have cultivated Dicky Meadows,
Dark Dicks, Light Dicks and Richartii at our coppice in Gloucestershire.
